The following are some family-focused assignments that will be coming home with your kids during this unit! Throughout our unit, we will encourage the students to share their projects and what they are learning with their families. This will hopefully start interesting conversations of memories, and help students understand the unit theme. During this unit, the students will have a few specific homework assignments that will require your involvement.
My doll is unique: Early on in the unit, students will complete a worksheet in class, they will write about why their paper doll is unique by using prompts “my doll is unique because…” After this in-class activity, they will need to bring their worksheets home and talk about their unique dolls with family member/guardians. They will write down other unique traits with their family members/ guardians on their worksheet.
"I am Special" Poem: As an in-class activity during the unit, students will listen to their teacher read the poem, and students will read the poem individually and with a partner. The poem will go home in the student’s reading folder, and we will note this as homework on the reading record and ask family members/ guardians to listen to the students read the poem and sign on the reading record.
Book about Me Students will create a book called About Me. We would like for the family members/guardians to have a conversation about what the student looks like, such as hair color, eye color and skin color, and also what he/she likes to eat, play, and wear before the activity. Once students have more ideas about themselves, they will be better prepared for doing this project. This will also allow the family to gain a better understanding of the work that their kids are doing at school. After the activity, students will bring their book home and read the part about themselves with their family members/guardians. They will need to complete the part “about my family member” with family members/guardians.
